How to apply a patch
with xen-Patch
All software and data
patches work slightly differently and will guide you through the process of
applying them. This article gives an overview of the basic process of applying a
patch.
xen-IP is delivered with
a set of patches which are installed on the client PC when xen-IP is installed.
These perform such functions as reassigning users, fixing database users and so
on. Various articles in this knowledgebase describe how to use each patch.
Some patches may, from
time to time, be available for download from the downloads page of the Xensis
web site. You will be informed by email when these are available and whether it
is important that you run them.
There are two basic
types of patch...
- Data patches which
update data in the database. Usually these will only need to be run once as
the same database is shared by all users.
- Software patches
which update the software or configuration on a client PC. Usually these
will need to be run on each PC on which xen-IP is installed.
To run a patch,
perform the following steps...
- Run xen-Patch by
selecting Start - Programs - Xensis - xen-Patch.
- You will then be
prompted to select the patch to be run, by default this will display a list
of the patches which are installed with xen-IP. If you want to run one of
these then select and open it in the usual manner. If you have downloaded a
patch from our web site and have stored it somewhere else, simply navigate
to it and open it.
- The patch then runs
and this is where the prompts will all be different depending on the patch
selected. Note that some patches may need Administrator rights on your PC
and some will need you to know the sa or XEN_ADMIN password, database and
server names, and so you may need to involve your IT Support if you don't
have this information or are unsure of what to do. You can always email
Xensis Support for information if required.
- After all the
prompts, the patch will run and the progress will be displayed on the
xen-Patch screen. You will be told when the patch has finished.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Patches
are named with a ".xen" extension. When downloading from our web site,
some versions of Windows will rename them to a ".zip" extension. So,
Fix Data.xen would become Fix Data.zip. To allow the patch to run, simply rename
it back to the original name with a ".xen" extension.
